My herd is fairly small only about 15 centaurs altogether. My name is Granite. My mate Aria has been going through some mighty intense mood swings lately so we're on our way to the herd shaman to see whats going on. We walk over to a large den made of intertwined Hazelnut branches.
"Shaman...?" I peer in to see if she is there. Sure enough the small dappled mare is in the corner of her den making some sort of salve in a grinding bowl. She turned to see Aria and I, She smiled warmly and waved us in whilst continuing her work diligently.
" Shaman, Aria has been acting odd" Ok I just earned a dirty look from that one and the old Grey mare just laughed.
" Moodiness, one minute she wants to cuddle the next she's rearing and kicking at me."
The old mare got up and put her hand to Aria's belly. Hmm? Maybe it was Colic?
Then the shaman went back to the corner." Congratulations you two, you'll be having a foal this spring."
W-wait a WHAT?!?!?! There's no way right !?
Aria looked like she was in shock. This was only her 4th heat cycle and she was already pregnant.
" I'm way too young for this!" she snapped
" Its uncommon but not unheard of. My mother was young too only 9 winters." Said Shaman
Aria glared" 7 winters!" he stormed out of the den. I thanked the Shaman but before I left I just had to ask. " Boy or girl?"
"Little Filly my boy" she smiled a wrinkly smile and I nodded in gratitude before leaving to go after my mate.
For the next few moon cycles I was the subject to my mates bitchiness through her hard pregnancy. I mean she was so small herself. An Arabian, And I a Gypsy Vanner. This foal was gonna suck to deliver.
A young palomino colt ran up to me.
"Granite, its time!" We both galloped over to the delivery patch were the mares would give birth. She wasn't the only one who was birthing though. My best friend from colthood Quartz was birthing her foal.
I went over to hold Aria's hand after a few hard pushes and a bone breaking grip on my poor hand the foal was born. A Chestnut Filly with Overo markings. She was so tiny. So precious. The shaman cleaned her and blessed her before bringing her to us, as this was an ancient tradition in this herd. Aria half smiled " Looks like your brother." he looked away from us and stared at the mountains in the distance." Do you want to hold her?" I asked. I received a scoff and a glare."I didn't ask to be a mother. I told you since we found out, I want no part of this!"
" Stop acting like a yearling! this is a joint effort. She isn't some doll ok, she is a living breathing thing that WE need to take care of! You're a mother now so stop acting like a spoilt brat and hold your daughter!" She got up and walked away
"I'm leaving this herd. You want that thing so bad keep it. I'm gone!" and with that she cantered off into the forest.
d-did that seriously just happen.
Did I just get left with a newborn foal?
Did my mate just leave me!?
A bloodcurdling cry filled the air and everyone turned their attention to Quartz's direction. I held my new foal and walked over to my best friend to see what happened. Her mate Draco looked like he was about to puke and when i looked at the foal I understood why. The poor couple had a Lethal white foal. It was a still born.
I nudged the big paint and let him know I'd keep her calm while he went to go get sick out of utter shock.I layed down next to the Palomino mare and laid my child down whilst i gave her a hug.
" This may not be the best time to ask but I'm in a serious predicament....Aria left me"
She looked at me with a tear stained face as if she knew what I was going to ask next.
" And my daughter needs someone to nurse from or she'll die."
The shaman and leader came by to collect Quartz dead son to get him ready for burial.
" I'll do it. I won't let this little one perish." she stroked the filly's cheek." Whats her name?"
I thought hard for a moment.
" God is gracious"
" He sure is."
